A team of former Pinterest designers and engineers has launched Extra, a completely reimagined Gmail client that replaces the traditional inbox structure with an AI-driven, life-organized view, according to TechCrunch. The product, released on April 21, 2026, comes from BuildForever, a consumer technology startup co-founded by former Pinterest executives, and it arrives at a moment when inbox overload has reached a measurable breaking point for users and marketers alike.

What BuildForever Built and Why

BuildForever's co-founder and CEO is Naveen Gavini, a former SVP and chief product officer at Pinterest who spent nearly 12 years at the company. The idea for Extra grew out of a frustration Gavini described to TechCrunch as structural: as emails pile up, the important ones simply fall off the page and into oblivion.

Extra, the first product from BuildForever, ditches subject lines, folders, and tags in favor of an inbox organized around your life, bringing everything important into a single, actionable overview within its "Today" tab. That tab updates in real time, giving users a brief on what actually needs their attention rather than forcing them to scroll through a chronological wall of messages.

Extra attempts to change this paradigm with an entirely new interface for email, and, under the hood, AI intelligence. Beyond the daily summary view, newsletter subscribers have a dedicated "News" tab that uses wide images, headlines, and snippets to encourage reading the full article, much like the Apple News app would. There is also an "Events" tab that pulls out appointments and plans from your email, suggests events you might like to add to your calendar, and, if you accept a suggestion, understands the logical next step, such as buying tickets for an upcoming concert, and surfaces that action directly.

The Funding and the Names Behind It

BuildForever is backed by $9.5 million in seed funding led by Abstract, A* (Kevin Hartz), Felicis, and Elad Gil. The investor list is notable. Angel investors include Pinterest co-founders Ben Silbermann and Evan Sharp, Gmail creator Paul Buchheit, OpenAI applications CEO Fidji Simo, Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra, Pinterest and Coinbase board member Gokul Rajaram, A24 partner Scott Belsky, Partiful CEO Shreya Murthy, and Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, among others.

That is a rare combination of consumer product credibility, email infrastructure expertise, and AI investment all pointed at one product.

Extra is free to use and will remain free, with monetization planned for a later point. It is available on the web and on iOS. For now, Extra works with Gmail only, but that could change in the future, and the company may possibly offer its own email addresses at some point.

Why This Matters for Email Marketers

The launch lands in a context that every marketer should pay close attention to. The average person now receives 121 business emails daily. That volume, combined with smarter inbox filtering, is already reshaping what it takes for a marketing email to be seen, let alone acted on.

Third-party email management tool adoption is accelerating. Clean Email already processes 5 billion emails annually, and as built-in provider solutions like Gmail filters and Outlook rules remain inadequate for many users, adoption of specialized cleanup and management tools is expected to grow 30 to 50% in 2026 as inbox overload worsens.

For marketers, that shift has real consequences. Tools like Extra introduce a new layer of algorithmic curation between your send and your subscriber. A Q1 2025 study by Clean Email, analyzing over 500,000 emails and tracking more than 10,000 active users, found that established brands, not scammers, now represent the primary threat to inbox sanity. When subscribers use AI-powered clients to auto-categorize and bulk-delete, promotional emails from brands that lack relevance or send too frequently are the first to disappear.

According to The Manifest's 2025 data, 69% of people unsubscribe because they receive too many emails from one sender. Extra's unsubscribe management feature gives users a direct, low-friction path to act on that impulse. For growth teams, that means list hygiene and send frequency matter more than ever.

The upside for brands that get it right is significant. Marketers are seeing returns of $36 to $42 for every dollar spent on email. And segmented email campaigns generate 30% more opens and 50% more click-throughs, according to HubSpot's 2025 State of Marketing Report. Tools like Extra, which surface content by category and relevance, effectively reward brands that send the right message to the right person at the right time and penalize those that spray and pray.

What Marketers Should Do Now

Extra is an early signal that AI-native inbox management is moving from power-user territory to mainstream consumer behavior. Recent launches in email clients broadly skew toward AI-assisted triage and actionability. As more recipients adopt tools that automatically sort, summarize, and bulk-delete their inboxes, the brands that treat the inbox as a relationship channel rather than a broadcast channel will hold the advantage.

Concretely, that means auditing your send frequency, tightening your segmentation, and making every campaign earn its place in a subscriber's categorized, AI-curated view. The inbox is getting smarter on the recipient side. Marketers need to match that.
